From a planning standpoint, the beginning of the year is important for employers in many ways. It also marks a new beginning for certain benefit components—including several account limits set by the IRS. The IRS announced 2022 changes to health savings accounts back in May, but it only recently unveiled annual changes to flexible savings accounts and 401(k)s. From contribution limits to out-of-pocket amounts, here are 11 figures that employers need to know— all of which come into play in January.
New York State Enacts Secure Choice Savings Plan – New Savings Opportunities for Employees, and New Obligations For Employers Without Retirement Plans
On Oct. 21, 2021, Gov. Hochul signed new legislation requiring private employers who do not sponsor a retirement plan to automatically enroll their employees into the State’s new program. The New York State Secure Choice Savings Plan (Program) is essentially an automatic IRA program funded with employee payroll deferrals. The Program is intended to provide financial benefits in retirement to those individuals without an employer-sponsored retirement vehicle by maximizing retirement participation and savings, while embodying sound investment practices. Plans are “portable” and move with employees, so when employees switch jobs they can continue to contribute or roll over their accounts into other retirement savings plans.

The past year was filled with ample challenges for companies, from navigating a remote workforce to operating during a global pandemic and rising to meet the new challenges of an ever-shifting world. iCIMS December Workforce Report: It’s Tough Out There - But You Already Knew That
Our Recruiting Platform partner iCIMS has shared their December Insights Report which includes the latest on labor market trends.
A couple of highlights include:
 The demand for talent continues as we approach the new year. Openings continue to rise, now up 74% since January 2021. Historically, iCIMS data shows the end of the year bringing a sharp slowdown in employers opening new jobs, but this year bucks that trend. Current job opening activity is more than 79% higher than the two prior Novembers (2019 and 2020).  Talent is not answering the call. According to iCIMS data, job applications have been on a steady decline since September and are now less than where we started the year (-3%).
 With this decline in applications also comes a slowdown in hiring. While hiring activity is up 56% since the start of the year, activity has been declining since its peak in September.
